What is Swing Dancing?

Swing dancing” refers to the dances that developed along with the swinging style of jazz music from around 1927 to 1945: when jazz became the popular music of the era. Think of big bands, sharply dressed jitterbugs, juke joints, hot jazz and crazy high-flying dancers!

What is Lindy Hop?

The Lindy Hop is the best-known of the swing dances. It’s an exciting and dynamic partnered dance that came out of Harlem in the late 1920s and spread around the world. It is often described as a jazz or street dance. You may know it as the “Jitterbug”. Read more about Lindy Hop at Wikipedia.

I’ve never danced before, where do I start?

If you’ve never danced before you needn’t worry! Simply rock up to one of our Level 1 classes and you’ll be dancing in no time.

Do I need to book?

No, you don’t need to book in for our weekly Level 1 classes.  Each class can be someone’s first, just drop in.

What do I need to bring to classes?

Yourself, your class fee and possibly a water bottle. A smile wouldn’t go astray but we can supply those.

What should I wear to classes?

Comfortable clothing (jeans etc) and comfortable shoes (we recommend sneakers).

Do I need to bring a partner?

We encourage you to but you certainly aren’t required to. We rotate partners in all of our classes so everyone gets a chance to dance with someone new on the night.

What is the average age of your students?

The ages of our students vary greatly from 18 to 65. Everyone’s welcome!

I’ve done dancing before, can I just skip your Level 1 classes?

Sorry, no. As dance professionals ourselves we strongly believe in learning a new dance from its foundation. Every dance is uniquely different and never more so than in the foundation and basic structure of the dance. We also teach basic “moves” like the Swing Out that are a requirement for moving into Lindy 1, without these you’re unable to attend our weekly classes.

Why should I take up Swing dancing?

Apart from it being the greatest dance ever invented by the Human Race? Well, because it’s great for fitness, for getting away from your TV set and for meeting new people!

Where Can I Dance?

Classes are one thing but there’s a time in every Lindy Hoppers life when they need to step away from the safety of the classroom, cast aside their reservations and DANCE! Luckily with Swing It! we have plenty of opportunities to test out your new rhythms and moves, cut a rug, dance up a storm and meet a host of new people.

“Swing ‘n’ Soul Sundays” are held every Sunday night at the Belgian Beer Cafe from 7.30pm – 10pm.

Perth’s best Swing DJs will be treating you to a combination of classic Swingin’ tunes and cool, old Soul tunes all of which are guaranteed to get you up and dancing the night away.

Both Swing and Soul were about smooth style so we invite you all to make this an evening of flare and sophistication. Break out your classic vintage threads or the coolest, most happenin’ attire you happen to have on hand (no jeans and t-shirt).

Free entry!
